If you’re a vinyl enthusiast and you live in the Chicagoland area, you’re in luck! Chicago is one of the best places in the nation to buy and sell records. With its status as the hub city of the midwest, legendary musical history, and continuously thriving music scene, Chicago is a great place to find great records.
Buying records is awesome, but like many awesome things in life it requires money. Money and space. So very soon, you may find yourself looking to sell some of your records to make more money and free up more space.
Maybe you’ve just moved here you may find yourself looking to free up more space in your new apartment in a cool neighborhood or maybe you’re looking back at all the records your cool cousin gave you when you were 16 and realized you haven’t listened to them in years. No matter what your reason is, you should know that selling records can be easy and painless if you keep a few things in mind:
Take stock of your collection
It’s easy to lose track of how many records you have, but the first step in selling them is to know what you should sell. Creating a spreadsheet with items like artist, title, and condition is a great way to take stock of your records without laying them all over the floor or shoving them all in a box and waiting around while a hapless record store clerk goes through them for you.
Get an idea of how much your collection is worth
We’re music lovers too and we know that each record is priceless, but if you’re selling them, it is good to know generally how much you should expect to receive from the buyer. When it comes to selling vinyl records, the condition plays a crucial role. Records are usually rated from Poor (P) to Mint (M), and knowing this grading scale can assist you in pricing your records appropriately. If you have any questions about how much something may be worth, don’t hesitate to ask us when you bring something in!
Find out where to sell
Chicago is a “city of neighborhoods” and these days, almost every neighborhood has its own record store. So if you’re looking to sell records, find which store is easiest to get to, friendliest or if their taste generally matches yours. Selling online with sites like Discogs is a great way to go if you have a lot of time and access to cheap shipping and mailing services, but it requires a great deal of patience to find potential buyers.
